Navigating bias in maternity care

Something I’d love everyone to know as they navigate the system is that bias is everywhere. From the research that informs clinical practice, to the way information is shared by HCPs and the way each of us as parents interpret and navigate the system. Unbiased, evidence based care doesn’t really exist, though there are many of us out there trying to check our biases and get somewhere as close to that as we can. Knowing this, the bias that matters most is yours. How do you feel about the choices ahead? Is it research evidence that informs you most? Is it the midwife, obstetrician, doula or other birth worker you trust? Is it your gut feeling or sense that something is important to you? Is it a mix of things? All are valid, but go into it thinking critically and keeping what matters most to you central.
